Living Medicines Vs Pharmaceuticals, part 2: Healing Herbs

“When you use a living medicine and get well, you feel that the world is alive and aware and wants to help you. People often talk about saving the Earth, but how many times have you experienced the Earth saving you?”

Healing Herbs
Stephen BuhnerI find it interesting that toxic plants often move into damaged landscapes. Some specimens are harmful to cattle or sheep who graze the land. Others interfere with industrial agriculture or threaten people. They all have the same purpose: stopping the source of the damage so that the landscape can regenerate itself. —Stephen Buhner

My Chorale PicTo heal means to make whole again that which has been fractured or fragmented. What Stephen Buhner describes above about “toxic plants” moving in where landscapes have been damaged speaks to the intelligence of healing herbs. These botanical plants have a living, functioning intelligence. As part of our Mother Earth from which our physical bodies arise, their energetic fields are connected to our energetic fields by way of which they speak to us. When we give them our attention, ask them the right questions, and then listen to their answers — which may come in the form of an attraction toward them, or even an aversion — they reach out to help us with their healing essences.

We’ve all had the experience, when out in Nature, of being attracted toward certain plants and flowers. Could that attraction and repelling be telling us something about the gift of healing being offered to us by the plants and flowers?  Of course, some plants warn us to stay away from them, such as poison ivy or poison oak, if we have an allergic condition.

I love the way Stephen Buhner goes about introducing his clients to herbs in this interview by Akshay Ahuja in the December, 2014 issue of The SUN magazine.

Ahuja: How do you go about treating patients as an herbalist?

Buhner: It’s a relationship, not a technique. My clients often feel lost and alone in their suffering. They need human companionship and also a sense of companionship with the living world. If I can, I’ll take them into the woods and introduce them to the plant that will be helping them.

In my book “The Lost Language of Plants” I tell the story of a twenty-eight-year-old woman who was going through a messy divorce. Her periods were extremely irregular, with heavy cramping and bleeding, and her hands were always cold. I could see that her whole body was closed off, curled in on itself. Her fingernails were chewed back deeply, as if she were eating herself alive.

I told her there was a plant I thought she should meet. We went for a walk through a pine forest, and when she saw the plant at the edge of a stream, a kind of force drew the woman and the plant together. The plant was Angelica, which has been used for thousands of years to help treat menstrual cramping. She spent a long time with it, then said a prayer and asked for help, and then we went to look for just the right Angelica. When we found it, she dug up the root, which has a beautiful smell. On the walk back she held it close to her. She was already carrying herself differently. The healing had started.

She took a tincture made from the root, and within a month her period had normalized.

HERBS GROW WHERE THEY ARE MOST NEEDED

We are more connected to our immediate environment than we may be aware. I am convinced that many of the viruses and bacterial infections we encounter are an integral part of our local habitat — unless they are transported by travelers from other parts of the world, as was the case with the Ebola virus.  It’s common knowledge as well that for every disease and ailment there’s a plant remedy in the botanical world. I would be curious to know what kind of herbs are growing in that part of Africa where the Ebola virus erupted. I am equally as curious to know what kind of herbs grow abundantly in my neck of the woods. Buhner addresses this subject in the interview:

Ahuja: Many of the plants in Herbal Antibiotics aren’t native to North America, Do you think people should look first to the plants around them for medicine?

Buhner: The book was written to offer alternatives to people who might die of a resistant infection, so I wanted to list anything they could reliably use in that circumstance. Still, many natural antibiotics do grow in the United States. I live in the Southwestern desert, and Bidens grows all around our house. It’s invasive. Sida grows along the Gulf Coast, and some Sida species grow in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. They’re all considered invasive. In fact, the most potent medicines for emerging infections tend to be invasive botanicals that people are busy trying to eradicate.

These invasive plants don’t move into a region for no reason. Take, for example, the berberine-containing plant Phellodendron. Berberine-containing plants are used to treat parasites and infections from yeast, fungi, bacteria, and viruses. Goldenseal was probably the most potent berberine plant in the U.S. until it was harvested to near extinction in the late 1800s. Phellodendron, which is a massive tree,is invasive in exactly the same range that goldenseal was removed from. And if you cut just one branch, you’ve got enough berberine
plant to last a year.

I’ve found that if people are ill, the plants they need are almost always growing in their vicinity. I’ve watched plant populations change around me in places I’ve lived for thirty-some years, and they seem to shift in response to changes in my own disease complexes. This sounds airy-fairy to the Western reductive mind-set, but people have been commenting on it since Hippocrates. Plant populations rise and fall according to the needs of the ecosystem in which they grow, and that includes the animal life there, which includes us.

Ahuja: Yet we act to remove invasive plants from ecosystems.

Buhner: Yes, these plants are seen as alien invaders…. Its not understood that dandelion and burdock and a host of other common plants are non-natives that moved in and established a balance with local ecosystems, or that many of the plants targeted for eradication happen to be effective against the exact diseases that local people are contracting. Japanese knotweed is invasive all up and down the East Coast, and its root is the most specific medicine there is for the treatment of Lyme disease. Theres a Lonicera species a honeysuckle that reduces mosquito egglaying wherever it grows. The mosquitoes that it discourages happen to carry dengue fever and a number of other viruses that cause encephalitis – inflammation of the brain. And it turns out that the plant is also a treatment for inflammation in the central nervous system. When plants move into an ecosystem, they do so because the ecosystem has been disrupted. The problem is that people dont ask, Why is this plant here?

Buhner offers suggestions on treating specific health conditions which I thought my readers would find helpful.

Aruja: My father is around sixty. I dont think he could imagine being without his daily blood-pressure pills. What are some alternative treatments for his condition?

Buhner: Regular fasting will lower blood pressure and keep it low. Certain kinds of simple, focused meditation will lower it. And many herbs, such as hawthorn and garlic, will do the same.

Ahuja: Have you worked much with cancer?

Buhner: I havent. The only type I have regularly treated is skin cancer, usually on the face. I learned the use of a traditional herb for it from a Mexican curandera many years ago. The root of Swertia radiata also known as monument plant or green gentian – is finely powdered, then mixed with Vaseline (nothing else will do) and applied to the cancer. Its left covered for three days. Once the bandage is removed, the cancer generally comes with it or lifts off with minimal effort. I have never had that treatment fail. It is easy, efficient, and noninvasive. . . .

I apologize for the lengthy excerpts, but I wanted to share with you the spirit and energy of the interview as well as the content, which sometimes direct quotes best convey.  We will explore some of the more specific uses of healing herbs in the next post. Until then, here’s to your health and haling . . . naturally!

Seven Glands for Seven Spirits—Part 6: Adrenals and the Single Eye

 Adrenal Glands atop the kidneys

Adrenal Glands atop the kidneys

THE ADRENAL GLANDS

“Two adrenal glands, more or less pyramid in shape, are located one above each kidney. Their primary hormones are adrenaline and its cohort, noradrenaline (produced in the adrenal medulla, the inner part), and corticosteroids or cortisone (produced in the adrenal cortex, the outer part). These are secreted upon demand and especially when the body is exposed to stress and strain.
Adrenal hormones are essential for the function, strength and integrity of all the cells in the body. The adrenal glands are supported by B Vitamins, especially Niacin and B6, along with the full spectrum of amino acids, such as those found in nuts and other protein-rich foods. The vibratory frequency I hear pre-sounding in my inner musical ear in the adrenal glands resonates with Orange-red and the musical pitch of A sharp.”

ONE SPIRIT

“From this sacred center, the Spirit of the Single Eye brings tranquility and sharp focus to the lens of the mind for concentration and for shining forth the Light of Truth. This spirit endows the mind with the capacity of logic and reason, as well as common sense. This works both ways, for as the mind is single in purpose and intent, power is released by this spirit through the adrenal glands for effective, creative action. The Creative Command, which always starts with “Let,” is thus released and articulated by the angel into the substance of love that fills this sacred seal.” (Both excerpts are from Sacred Anatomy)

Tranquility and Focus are the gifts of the Spirit of the Single Eye. Here is the sixth verse of my poem The Seven Spirits of God:

I am the Spirit of the Single Eye
I bring power to my body, focus to my mind,
precision to my movement, tranquility to my world

THE EYE, THE LIGHT OF THE BODY

There is a passage in the Gospels that speaks to the function of the adrenal glands and the Spirit of the Single Eye.

The light of the body is the eye. When, therefore, thine eye is single, thy whole body also is full of light; but when thine eye is evil, thy body also if full of darkness. Take heed therefore that the light which is in thee be not darkness. If thy whole body therefore be full of light, having no part dark, the whole shall be full of light, as when the bright shining of a candle doth give thee light.  (Luke 11:34-36)

Then there’s this expansion on the theme in the Gospel of James:

A double minded man is unstable in all his ways. (James 1:8)

Not much more can be added to these statements.  They pretty much speak for themselves.  Jesus was a physician of the soul. He is called the “Great Physician.”  Luke is also thought to have been a physician. The health of the body is dependent upon the health of the soul.  The soul of a man is invisible.  It is the spiritual, or vibrational, aspect of the human being that is connected directly to the endocrine system by way of light frequencies encoded with messages from spirit.

The two adrenal glands are designed to be strictly under the direct control of the Spirit of the Single Eye.  The Single Eye radiates from out of the pineal gland in the center of the brain when the adrenal glands are engaged by the Spirit of the Single Eye.  Engaged by any other spirit these glands are not available to the Spirit of the Single Eye and will consequently fail in their normal function, which is to provide focus for clear and right thinking and power for precise action.  Such focus and power is born out of a tranquil mind, and tranquility is born out of patience.  We will consider patience in part 7 when we contemplate the Spirit of the New Earth and the gonadal glands.

The one standing in the midst of the seven golden candlesticks is described as having eyes that were “as a flame of fire.” Two eyes, one flame.  This is true for us when our eye is single.  We have power to focus our minds to accomplish the task at hand.  That focus is none other than Love.  When we love what we are doing and our thoughts spring out of a mind that is bent on doing what is right, we have limitless power available to us by reason of our adrenal glands.

St. Thomas recorded Jesus’ words in a little different way:

Therefore I say that if one is unified one will be filled with light; but if one is divided one will be filled with darkness. —Jesus, from The Gospel of Thomas

SERVE ONE MASTER

One can be divided by the nature of the purpose one serves. If that purpose is not true to one’s sense of honesty and integrity, true to one’s spiritual essence and purpose for living and serving in this world, then one is divided.  The Master Jesus said something about this state:

No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.  (Matt 6:24)

Mammon relates to the deification of wealth and the worship of material riches set aside, as in a depository or investment, for security.  This pretty well describes the current state of affairs in our world.  I find there is much darkness present in human thinking regarding health and disease.  So little understanding of how the human body functions as a whole entity coordinated by the coherent light of life.  And I believe that this darkness of ignorance stems from the human scientific mind attempting to play God, only it doesn’t serve God. It serves mammon. It serves itself, thinking that by understanding the state of disease, which is darkness, it will be able to produce a state of health in human beings—and health is wealth, or so we say.  But we will never produce health by studying and understanding disease.   It is only by understanding health, which is light, that man will come to experience health.  Let the mind be filled with light and not darkness—the light of understanding rather than the darkness of ignorance. Light will then fill the human mind, and the whole body, when our eye is single—and that will happen when we serve God alone.  One master.

Let your mind be single in purpose and light will fill your whole body.  Power and strength, then, will be made available to you in your service to God and your neighbor.  A worthy resolution for the New Year.

Best wishes to your health and healing this New Year’s day and throughout the coming year.

“Vitamin E” and Prostate Cancer ~ The Whole Truth

Here’s what JAMA reports on the subject:

A recent Journal of the American Medical Association study found that vitamin E is not effective in preventing prostate cancer and in fact also raised the possibility that it’s tied to prostate cancer. That report is the latest ding to a dietary-supplement business that saw its industry revenues fall to $350 million in the U.S. last year from $650 million in 2004, according to Nutrition Business Journal estimates.

It may well be that the so-called “vitamin E” people are taking is not really Vitamin E and therefore is not functioning as Vitamin E, a powerful antioxidant.  But whole Vitamin E is a lot more than an antioxidant.  Read on. . . .

Let’s talk about Vitamin E . . . and Vitamin C while we’re at it.

 KNOW YOUR VITAMINS

—Patients are always telling me that they are taking “Vitamin C” and “Vitamin E,” and I’m always quick to correct them.  “No, you’re not taking Vitamin C nor Vitamin E because the so called ‘vitamin E’ you’re taking is NOT Vitamin E, and the so-called ‘vitamin C’ is NOT Vitamin C,” and here’s the reason why.”

The Food and Drug Administration has allowed “ascorbic acid” to be called Vitamin C and for “d alpha tocopherol” to be called Vitamin E.  As we can clearly see from the diagrams below, there is a lot more to Vitamin C than “ascorbic acid” and to Vitamin E than “d alpha  tocopherol.”  These fractions serve as part of the envelope surrounding the delicate essences and co-factors of the nutrient complexes – the very essential ingredients that make the vitamin complex work – protecting them from oxidation.  They are all that’s left after commercial food processors get through extracting them from foods with the use of heat and pressure that destroy the rest of the complexes. In the case of Vitamin E, only one of the four antioxidant tocopherols – alpha tocopherol – is left, and the “d” in front of it tell you it’s a synthetic product.

They are called “Vitamin C” and “Vitamin E,” but they are no more the whole vitamin complex than an orange peal alone is the whole orange or an egg shell the whole egg.

The key word here is “Functional.”  Vitamin E functions as a whole component, as does Vitamin C.  If you take them apart  they don’t function.  An analogy would be to take a Swiss watch and smash it with a hammer.  You still have a watch, but it won’t function as a time piece.

Those of you familiar with muscle testing will understand that when commercial vitamin E was given to a test subject, the arm test was weak.  But when a whole-food Vitamin E (Cataplex E  by Standard Process Labs.) was given to him, he tested strong.  That’s because Cataplex E functioned where the commercial vitamin E did not and could not because it isn’t Vitamin E.

But that’s not the end of the story. It gets worse. Read on.

These fractioned components are incomplete and, therefore, seek to complete themselves as whole nutrients when turned loose inside your body, and they will rob from it what they need to complete themselves.

For example, ascorbic acid leaches out tyrosinase (cooper), a mineral that is vital to the health of arteries and veins, leaving your blood vascular system susceptible to aneurism and the hormone estrogen without an activating mechanism. Alpha tocopherol (or the synthetic “d alpha tocopherol”) leaches out selenium, another mineral vital to your blood vascular system, leaving your blood arteries unprotected against plaque formation.

When you take these fractioned “vitamins” into your body, you are not giving it the vital essences of whole nutrients it needs. For example, the bioflavonoids and  the “P” factors that strengthen vessel walls and connective tissues throughout the body, not to mention the cooper you’re not getting and losing when it is leached out.

Ascorbic acid has also been shown to scratch the inner lining of the blood vessels if taken in dosages of 500+ mg daily for more than eighteen weeks, contributing to atherosclerosis, plaque build up in the arteries.  With alpha tocopherol “Vitamin E” you do not get all the fatty acids essential to heart health nor the natural chelators for your arteries and anti-oxidants to prevent your oils from going rancid.

Dr. John Courtney of Standard Process Labs explains it clearly.

The body is designed to utilize food in its whole form. If you eat incomplete foods, such as refined tocopherols, all the missing factors are borrowed from the tissue reserves in order to make the partial food usable. Sooner or later, depending on the patient’s past eating habits, there will be a deficiency of those nutrients, causing what’s referred to as a “reversal of symptoms.” This means there is a recurrence of the same symptoms, which were causing the problem in the first place, often to a more serious degree.

Bicknell and Prescott, in their book THE VITAMINS IN MEDICINE, talk about bone decalcification and other problems caused by the use of excessive alpha tocopherol.  So high potency vitamins are similar to drugs in their effect. They cause a masking of symptoms, which eventually creates additional problems. Dr. Lee [Royal Lee is the founder of SP] used to say that using high potency vitamins was like whipping a tired horse; he would be stimulated to run faster but sooner or later he collapses because you never fed him.

Sometimes doctors call us for help with patients with cramps. This could be cramps anywhere in the body-the legs, abdomen, heart, etc. They will say, “I’ve tried everything I could nutritionally, calcium, magnesium, etc., and the patient still has cramps.” Then we ask if the patient is taking high potency vitamin E. Many times they are, and the cramps developed after they started taking the high potency vitamin E. Then, of course, we suggest the doctor take the patient off the high potency vitamin E product. Our approach is to give the patient the specific food factors which he’s lacking, along with the associated factors, which make it work.

It is clear that whole food nutrients alone will help you.  The others will only hurt your body.  Remember, if it isn’t a food it’s a toxin. If you want Vitamins C and E you have to eat whole foods that are grown organically. If you want them in organically whole food supplement form, drop me an email and I will gladly send some to you.

The Healing Process: Signaling Messengers and Diabetes

Redox Signaling Messengers

Like any community, the body cells depend on communication for their coordinated and harmonious function together. Communication depends on messengers, both inside the cell between the various actors and “micro machines”  and outside the cell between the one-hundred-billion cells that compose our bodies.  These next few posts will be about these messengers, most recently discovered among them being the Redox Signaling Messengers that turn out to be a most important players in the healing process.  We will have a look at a very significant scientific breakthrough in the field of health and healing.  Again, we will call upon Dr. Gary L. Samuelson to help us envision and understand the Healing Process as he presents it in his recently released booklet, The Science of Healing Revealed – New Insights into Redox Signaling.

How the Actors Work Together – The Signaling Messengers

So far in our abbreviated organization chart, a small sample of the cast of actors has been put together in order to provide a tiny taste of what they look like and what they do. There are thousands more (not listed, thankfully) that fill major roles inside and outside the cell; and the list is growing every day as new actors and roles are being discovered. The real story, however, lies not so much in what they look like or what their job description is, but in how they interact with each other and how they determine when and where to do their job.

For the most part, the cellular micro machinery is controlled by the various signaling messengers, as has already been mentioned, that go about carrying messages inside the individual cells (intracellular communication) as well as carrying messages between the cells (intercellular communication). As has also been mentioned, the very identity and behavior of the cell depends on the quantities and types of messengers being passed around in its surrounding environment.

The inner-cell (intracellular) messengers float around inside the seawater solution (cytosol) inside the cells. There are generally two types of intracellular messengers: (1) protein messengers that are coded by the DNA and built, delivered, passed around and modified by enzymes and cellular machinery and (2) a recently discovered network of messengers called “redox signaling and regulation” messengers made out of small, highly reactive molecules (ROS and RS) that are formed by the REDuction” and “OXidation'” (redox) of the very sea-water bath that surrounds all of this cellular machinery. These messengers modify the behavior of the machinery by changing the chemical potential in the salt-water environment where all of this machinery exists. Since these “redox” messengers are integrally involved in the healing process, they will be the topic of further investigation in this booklet.

The between-cell (intercellular) messengers are passed back and forth between cells. In order for them to work they must be able to leave one cell and “latch onto” or pass into surrounding cells. There are specific places built into the outer membranes of the cells, called “receptors” and “co-receptors,” where these messengers are allowed to “latch onto” the outside of the cell. Each different type of messenger molecule (called agonist) has its own custom-built latch (receptor) that allows it to pass a signal into the cell.

In many cases, the receptor itself, when latched, will cause intracellular messengers to be released to continue carrying the message into the cell. Most cells are stuck together with a scaffolding of adhesive molecules that allow messages to more easily be passed around among neighboring cells.

Redox messengers are able to alter the chemistry of the receptor latches that can either enhance or inhibit their ability to latch onto their messengers and pass messages into the cell. Sometimes the presence of these redox messengers themselves will spontaneously trigger a receptor to send messages into the cell.

In my next post we will explore further some amazing technology that has made it possible for us to enhance intra-and-inter-cellular communication.  Before leaving my blog, take a few minutes to view this video clip on the Redox Signaling Molecule (5 min).

Besides giving a visual demonstration of how these signaling messengers work, this clip presents recent groundbreaking technology that is being used to stabilize these highly reactive molecules outside the body and then use them as bio-active, non-toxic agents inside the body to assist in the healing process.

The end result of this research is a formulated “water” called “ASEA” that is now available to the public through network marketing.  I have become an associate distributor of this product because of the great promise it holds for my patients and clients at a foundational level in their healing and health maintenance, offering new solutions to longevity and quality of healthful living.  It also gives people a tool they can use safely and obtain directly from the company without the requirement of becoming a network marketer themselves, although that is available as well as a home-based business with minimal investment.  So, enjoy the clip! Until next week then, my best wishes . . .

To your health and healing,

Dr. Tony Palombo

Sunshine, tans and skin cancer

Sunshine is only dangerous to people deficient in “Vitamin F”

Skin cancer appears to be on the increase among sun-bathers and tanning bed users, the latter being singled out as the prime culprit for the increase due to year-round use by a vast number of young “looks-conscious” adults.  It seems that tanning beds are the latest addiction, fed by soaking up skin-burning (and that’s what it smells like inside these tanning chambers) UV rays that produces feel-good endorphins.  So, I thought an article on the subject would be helpful as people head to the beaches for summer fun and natural skin tanning.

Sunshine is only dangerous to people deficient in “Vitamin F.”   Yes, I said “Vitamin F”, which is what Dr. Royal Lee, founder of Standard Process Labs, first named Essential Fatty Acids (EFA).  EFA’s are  linolenic, linoleic and arachidonic acids.  Flaxseed oil is a very excellent source of EFA’s.  Flaxseed oil is a very unstable and fragile oil that goes rancid when exposed to light or air, so it is best to take it encapsulated in a pearl. Standard Process’ Linum B6 is probably the safest Flaxseed oil product available (go to www.standardprocess.com and search for Linum B6).

Flaxseed oil should be packaged in dark bottles and kept refrigerated.  Don’t buy flaxseed oil in a clear bottle as it’s likely already rancid. Foods that are rich in EFA’s are cold water fish and shellfish, soya oil, canola (rapeseed) oil, hemp oil, chia seeds, flaxseeds, pumpkin seeds, leafy vegetables, and walnuts.  All of these are best eaten fresh and oils should be cold-processed and non-hydrogenated.  Our bodies need at least 3 tablespoons of EFA oils daily just for maintenance.   If you know you’ve not been consuming that much oil and butter, then supplementation with Linum B6 (3-6 daily) for 90 days is recommended in order to fill the deficiency.

 How it works

Vitamin F (EFA) is what transports calcium from the blood into the tissues, such as the skin.  Sunshine converts EFA in the skin (basically cholesterol, or fat)  into Vitamin D.  It is very likely that those who get skin cancer from too much exposure to UV rays (from the sun or from tanning beds) are also avoiding fats, such as butter, in their diet just for shapely looks, although cardiovascular patients may be avoiding fats to keep cholesterol numbers down.  Not wise.  You need fat, only the right kind of fat. Polyunsaturated fat is what the body needs.

Actually, the body can only use fat in the form of Arachidonic Acid, which is made from Linoleic Acid in the liver.  Arachidonic acid is not found in vegetable oil, but only in fat meat and butter.  (Margarine is a “phony” product produced by hooking two hydrogen atoms to the double-bond of linoleic acid, making it a saturated fat (stearic acid) that cannot latch onto fat in order to metabolize and burn it for energy).

Vitamin D takes calcium from the gut and puts it into the blood stream.  Vitamin F takes calcium from the blood stream and puts it into the tissues.   Calcium obviously plays an important role throughout the body, and especially in the health and integrity of the skin.

Thick, itchy skin and Vitamins D & F deficiencies

People who are deficient in Vitamin F (EFA) will get thick skin from too much exposure to UV rays.  In a deficiency of Vitamin F, Vitamin D will not only pick up calcium from the gut and put it in the blood, but will also bring calcium out of the skin and put it into the blood.  Your blood calcium will increase at the expense of your tissue calcium.

Tissue calcium deficiency results in itching skin and hives with too much sun – the big whelps that form around tender parts of the body.  These are symptoms of tissue calcium deficiency.  If you have these symptoms, you can be sure you are not getting enough EFA’s and/or calcium in your diet. You need calcium lactate, a readily available form of calcium, and flaxseed oil.

Drop me an email at tpal70@gmail.com for more information about supplementation.  In the meantime, enjoy the sun in the late afternoon, and only for 15 minutes, or until the skin begins to be pink.  And eat your fresh seeds and nuts, which are rich in essential fatty acids. And remember, margarine’s a phony.  “Butter’s better!”

COMMENTS AND CORRESPONDENCE WORTH SHARING WITH ALL

I receive emails with some very good questions.  Some of them, along with my answers, are worth sharing with all.  So here are some:

Q: Thank you for your info on the article that you wrote on EFA ..on the importance of butter ..
What about olive oil, oil palm etc.. are they suitable oil for Liver..
Where can I get the necessary info on all that you have written about..
Many people seem to blame the sun ..maybe it is our EFA that we should be concerned about.
Please provide more info if you have any.

DrP: Thanks for your email.  Olive oil is an excellent oil, particularly Extra Virgin or Virgin. Don’t bother with the “Pure” or “Refined” oils.  Palm oil is not recommended, nor cottonseed oil, as too many chemicals are used both in growing cotton and in extracting the oils from the seeds and palm kernels.  Best to use oils that are food-sourced, organically grown and cold processed.  Here’s a good website for organic palm oil: http://www.tropicaltraditions.com/red_palm_oil.htm

I obtained all of my nutritional information for this post on my blog from professional manuals that are not readily available to the layman.  You can obtain information about products online at www.standardprocess.com  then type in the name of their product you want info on.  You might call SPand ask for information/books/papers they may have to send you. There’s a very excellent book, “Know Your Fats” by Mary Enig if you want accurate info about EFA’s.  You can order it online through Amazon.

Understand, sunshine is good for us, essential to make Vitamin D, but too much of anything good always seems to do us harm.  For that reason, late afternoon sunbathing (4:30) is advised, especially at high altitudes, like here in mile-high Denver.  We should be concerned about our EFA levels. You’re so right.  Sounds like you’re doing your own thinking for yourself.

Q.  When I get out of the shower I cut a piece of alovera off and apply it to my face for all the reasons aloe is good for us (healing, cooling, moisturizing, etc). Later, when the aloe has had a good chance to absorb I add moisturizer to my face too (aloe feels tight and it’s shiny and I just like to use moisturizer). IF flax seed is good on the inside do you think it would be good on the outside too? I could pinch a flax seed capsule open and add it to the aloe so it would rub in smoothly and maybe, just maybe that would be a good idea to prevent sun damage on my face directly. I was thinking of adding flax seed to the aloe because maybe the flax seed is too thick like vitamin E. What do you think??? You have me thinking in this flax seed direction now.

DrP:  Ha ha!  So it seems I do!  Yes, in fact Standard Process Labs makes a tube of flaxseed ointment, USF Ointment, for application to skin, especially dry skin.  Any oil applied to the skin will sort of make your skin cook, so I would only use it after being in the sun.  I’ll be happy to send some to you ($17 + postage). Good question.  Thanks for asking.

Q:   If I take more, more more flax seed will I reduce, reduce, reduce my chances of skin cancer?? What are you a doctor of?

DrP:  All things in moderation is my motto when it comes to foods and sunbathing.  Of course we need sunshine, and our bodies need about 3 tablespons of oils daily just for maintenance.  If you are consuming oils, such as olive oil in salads, eating butter and cold water fish, walnuts and seeds, then you could take 1 – 2 tblspns of Flaxseed oil, or three Linum B6 pearls from Standard Process daily and feel safe out in the sun.  If you are EFA deficient because you have not been consuming enough oils daily, then you would need to take at least 3 tblspns of Flaxseed oil for 90 days, or 6 Linum B6 pearls, daily on top of increasing your consumption of EFA’s in your diet. It takes about that long to fill a deficiency of nutrients.  Yes, you would decrease your chances of getting skin cancer from sunshine by increasing your consumption of EFA’s.  Of course there are other causes of skin cancer, from genetic factors to free radial DNA damage due to environmental pollutants.
My profession is chiropractic and clinical nuitrition. I have 45 years of experience.  I am currently retired doing one-on-one health coaching.

Q:  I read through your comment concerning the LiveScience publication on ‘You and the Sun:10 Burning Questions’.  I would need to know more on possibly fruits/food contents of these vitamins that helps protect the skin or that refreshes the skin generally.

DrP:  Foods rich in essential fatty acids, or Vitamin F, are seeds and walnuts and any foods that have oils in them, such as olives, avocadoes, fish.  Dark green leafy vegetables, such as spinach, are rich in calcium, as are carrots.  Wheat germ (Vitamion E) helps protect the skin from oxydation because it is such a great anti-oxydant. The skin, as an organ of elimination, tends to reflect the other organs of elimination, such as the liver, kidneys and colon.  So it is good to support these systems as well.  Eating plenty of a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables guarantees an healthful intake of nutrients.  If you want to supplement your diet with whole-food nutritional proucts, I will be happy to assist you in acquiring them.  Let me know if I can be of any further assistance.

Q: The letter asked about eczema and Vitamins F & D.

DrP:  What you describe does indeed sound like eczema, in which case it certainly would help to support your skin nutritionally.  Eczema is a condition that reflects a deeper issue relating to liver toxicity or congestion.  I do have a protocol (nutritional program) for eczema that addresses the underlying cause.  If you wish to engage my services, I would be happy to guide you through a purification and healing process.
